A new, feminist Arthurian retelling

File Under: Fantasy

[Final Image to Come]

The Cleaving is an Arthurian retelling that follows the tangled stories of four women: Nimue, Ygraine, Morgana, and Guinevere, as they fight to control their own destinies amid the wars and rivalries that will determine the destiny of Britain.  Based on the high medieval Romance tellings of Arthur rather than being shackled to any historical rationale this will be a story familiar to lovers of Malory, Crossley Holland and Borman’s Excalibur alike: a vibrant and bloody tale of chivalry, betrayal, deceit, power and magic. The Arthurian stories are foundational to the culture of these islands as well as being a cornerstone for much of the modern fantasy genre. Retellings have explored different facets of these stories since their earliest day, and The Cleaving addresses and interrogates these enduring tales through the female gaze to create a mesmerizing and intriguing tale for today. Juliet McKenna is an expert on medieval history and warfare and brings this expertise as well as her skills as a fantasy writer to this epic standalone novel.
