Watkins Media are seeking a super talented designer brimming with creativity and a clear understanding of the commercial requirements of publishing. The role requires someone capable of coming up with exciting, strong and eye-catching cover designs across all our imprints (Watkins, Angry Robot and Nourish), so a background that includes non-fiction and fiction titles would be an advantage. Experience with Internal layouts and social media posts would also be an advantage. You’ll take visuals from concept through to print so a solid understanding of the print process is important. Key requirements for this role: enthusiasm and passion for design, a love of being part of a design team, illustration and image manipulation skills, multi-tasking and a strong background in concept design. This role involves working closely with the head of design, editorial, production and sales colleagues to develop and deliver impressive new cover and internal book designs. You will relish the chance to use your existing experience across a range of non-fiction and fiction titles, to shape these fast-growing lists, producing innovative ideas with outstanding international and UK commercial potential. To be considered for this vacancy you must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in publishing, be self-motivated, demonstrate a genuine love for book design, and show strong market awareness. You will have a passion for design, and finding creative solutions, as well as being highly proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. You will be organised, deadline-driven, and good at building strong working relationships. Confident communication and interpersonal skills are essential. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to help develop some exceptional books.
This is a full-time role which will be mainly based at our Islington Offices. The salary for this role is between £27,000 to £33,000 dependent on experience.
Candidates will be selected for interview based on their abilities and we would particularly welcome applications from groups currently under-represented in book publishing. We anticipate the selection process comprising a combination of online and face to face interviews and the submission of practical tests by email. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
To apply please send your cover email, CV and your portfolio or examples of your work to our Head of Design – Karen Smith, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
