Yup, another day, another press release… This one bears the extraordinary title of:

ANGRY ROBOT’S LATEST SIGNING: TITANIC WITH VAMPIRES!

The tireless team at Angry Robot have joined forces with author Matt Forbeck for an outrageous re-imagining of the events following the sinking of the SS Titanic in April 1912. Carpathia tells the story of the handful of the survivors of the disaster being rescued by the vessel of that name… only to discover the ship is full of vampires!

The deal was arranged between Matt Forbeck and Angry Robot’s Publishing Director Marc Gascoigne, who enthused: “When Matt and I first sat down to discuss the concept I was hooked instantly. With the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic due next April, we are sure to be bombarded by the usual array of documentaries and re-runs of a certain Di Caprio film – but this is going to turn that on its head. Matt has a genuine talent for cinematic writing, and Carpathia is going to be like Titanic meets 30 Days of Night.”

The deal, which includes worldwide publication in paperback, eBook and audio formats, will see Carpathia released in March 2012, just ahead of the centenary of the real disaster.

Matt Forbeck added: “I couldn’t be more thrilled than to be back with Angry Robot again for my third original novel. As they proved with Amortals and Vegas Knights – as well as with the rest of their fantastic line of books – they know and love great, fun fiction and are leading the charge to bring it to readers around the world.”

The bottom line: We cannot wait to read this book!

Announcing Angry Robot audiobooks!

Posted by: | Comments (5)

Yes, it’s big news press release time again! Here’s what we just announced to the publishing world…

Lively British science fiction and fantasy publisher Angry Robot (that’s us!) has signed an exclusive licensing deal with the renowned Brilliance Audio. The US-based company will create and release audio editions of the imprint’s titles, including new releases and selected backlist. Recordings will be available for the retail and library markets on compact discs, MP3-formatted compact discs, and as files for download worldwide.

Brilliance Audio, a Michigan-based audiobook publisher that is part of the Amazon.com group of companies, publishes more than 600 audiobook titles annually. They are a leading publisher of Science Fiction and Fantasy in audio, having published multiple Hugo and Nebula nominees and winners.

Briliance’s SF & Fantasy Manager, the tireless John Grace said, “The one thing I know is that the face of publishing will be very different ten years from now. What I don’t know is what it will look like. What I am personally sure of is that publishers like Angry Robot who are focused and specialize in something they are passionate about will flourish in the future, which is why I’m very glad to join forces with them.”

Meanwhile, our Marco added: “Today’s customer wants great stories, as they always have, but they want them in the format that’s most convenient to them – which isn’t always the traditional one. Our ultimate aim is to have our books appear in all popular formats, to any reader anywhere in the world, at the same time. Brilliance will help us realise this aim, brilliantly.” (See what he did there?)

Additionally, we can tell you that titles will be appearing as soon as this summer! As soon as we have a confirmed set of release dates, you’ll read them here first.

A new Angry Robot imprint announced

Posted by: | Comments (20)

This has been over a year in the making, and you’re going to be reading a lot about this over the next couple of days, but we thought we’d share it with you, first.

We love science fiction, fantasy and horror, and our genres have become part of the mainstream – you can’t move for SF films and TV series. It was only a matter of time before we turned our attention to another popular genre.

Romance and eroticism have been outselling SF for decades, and the readers of these works – like SF fans – are fiercely loyal, so we have decided to launch a romance/eroticism imprint. We’re not going to be going down the same route as other publishers, though – that’s not the Angry Robot way. No, all of the titles written for the newly-formed Robot Amour, will be penned by existing Angry Robot authors and based on their existing titles. SF and romance – now that’s something special!

We’ll start off with just one title per month (from September 2011).

Our first few titles are:

Soulmate Stealers by Andy Remic
When Saark’s childhood sweetheart is captured by the evil vachine, he turns to his old friend Kell for help.
File Under: Romantic Fantasy [ Stolen Kisses | Land Of The Lost | Pork Swordmaster | To Kell With It ]

Triumff: Her Majesty’s Paramour by Dan Abnett
Sir Rupert Triumff has returned from another quest to find more magical lands for his Queen, but a chance encounter at the palace makes them both realise that the one true magic is… love.
File Under: Romantic Comedy [ Puns-a-million | Comedy Of Errors | A Royal Pardon | Knight Time Activities ]

Emma, Bedded by Dan Abnett
Lex Falk is on another mission – this time, with the aid of his dog, Patch, he infiltrates the bordellos on the prisoner planet of Mattress Springs, though they’re fiercely protected by the Military. To get inside, he must get his mind chipped into the brain of a veteran courtesan – Emma Climatis – but will he be able to fight off the advances of the owner of the the bordello for long? And does he really want to…?
File Under: Erotic SF [ Hard Time | Penile Colony | Thrilling Climax | Wet Patch ]

Sixty-Nine Nails by Mike Shevdon
Rabbit and Blackbird fight to preserve one of the world’s oldest activities, when six of the Seven Courts vote to outlaw it. They decide to enlist the aid of the Seventh Court, who always fight to get a head. The task seems hopeless, until they discover an ancient French rite involving nine bread-based foodstuffs.
File Under: Erotic Urban Fantasy [ Croissant Neuf | Man Of Iron | Like Rabbits | Feyre Comment ]

All titles will be released as eBooks and paperbacks, worldwide.

Competition Time – Remix the Robot!

Posted by: | Comments (3)

Announcing! The frankly incredible Remix the Angry Robot Theme Tune contest. Woah lawd yeah!

OK, so first there were our wonderful monthly podcasts, conducted by Mighty Mur Lafferty (no really, that’s her full three-word name – check her passport if you don’t believe us). To help give her broadcasts a proper opening, our Mur commissioned the uncontainable talents of John Anealio to create the Angry Robot theme tune. And lo, toes were tapped most verily and heads they did nod.

Its life-changing twenty-two seconds were enough to lead into whichever of our intrepid authors were braving Mur’s piercing questions, but unbeknownst to us mere mortals, minds immeasurably superior to ours were beavering away behind the scenes on something far grander. For yes indeed, that man Matt Forbeck was plotting away with the selfsame Anealio to produce a version that had, oh my, verses… containing, gasp, lyrics, no less. And thus it became lead track on John’s recent Robots EP, still available for ** free ** download over at Bandcamp.

But that busy Mr Anealio couldn’t resist fiddling about. Typical human. So this week he debuted the following gentle mood manipulator, the unplugged version of “Angry Robot”, via the primitive broadcast system known as YouTube:

But why should the composer have all fun, you cry! Where’s our chance to dick around with this song, you demand! Well hush yo mouth and listen up, sparky, cos that’s what we’re getting to.

For yes, we can proudly announce our next frankly mental contest. Unlike your average genre publisher, Angry Robot has a theme tune. Now it’s time for you guys to REMIX THE THEME TUNE. Here’s all you have to do…

1) Follow the link of your choice below to download the multitracked parts of John and Matt’s full length Angry Robot song.

2) Slice, dice, layer, shuffle, remix, scratch, burn, weld, rip, belay and flense them into a totally different form. Or use these as inspiration for your own band’s version. Or get out comb, paper and vastly expensive sampling software now inexplicably available on your iPhone for only 59¢ and make the ultimate bootleg mash-up. Whatever it takes, make us a new version of the Angry Robot song and rock our metal souls.

3) Send us the resultant magnificent octopus as an MP3, by the end of April 1st.

Assisted by the astute brains of Mr John Anealio and the very Reverend Matt Forbeck we’ll pick our favourites and host them here. If we get enough good tracks, we can probably be persuaded to sort out a Bandcamp EP of all of them, for one and all to download until the robot cows come home.

And of course the very best one will win something as demented as the song: you’ll get a role in Matt Forbeck’s next novel for Angry Robot – and a very nasty death is guaranteed too!

The various parts you need are no longer available, because the competition has closed. Sorry.

John said to tell you muso types that the original files are in D minor, at 116 bpm. Yeah, like, back in the lab, professor! Anyways, send your entries as an MP3, preferably inside a .zip file, to us at incoming@angryrobotbooks.com

Don’t forget sensible stuff like your name and email address, and remember to ask your parent or guardian before using any scissors.

THE SMALL PRINT
All samples are provided as is. All samples are freely usable in any way you see fit, under Creative Commons. You are allowed to chop these samples into pieces, loop fragments, blow them up, timestretch them out, do whatever. If you use any samples from *other people’s works* for some demented mash-up and they come after you with swanky lawyers, we don’t know you. If somehow you have a top ten hit with these and are suddenly neck-deep in floozies and fast cars, ours is a pint of champers and a Ferrari. Each. You agree that we can post your mad remixes on the internet for humans to hear.

And here are two more sets of sample chapters for you – classic steampunk romps from the godfather of steampunk, KW Jeter:

The Zoo City Soundtrack

Posted by: | Comments (2)

Lauren Beukes’ unparalleled Zoo City is now out everywhere, and attracting much love. To enhance your reading experience, a wonderful soundtrack to accompany the book has been created too, in conjunction with acclaimed South African production house African Dope.

Compiled by Lauren and African Dope producer HoneyB, it features an eclectic line-up, ranging from old school kwaito from Ishmael and Brown Dash to gritty electronica from 37 MPH and Markus Wormstorm. It’s the perfect mood-setter to join Zinzi December and Sloth in their extraordinary trek through the shattered city in search of their missing pop starlet.

You can listen to the whole thing over at African Dope’s site or go straight to their store to snap it up for yourself – and here’s a code to get it with 50% off, courtesy of Lauren herself: Marabou&malt3s3

Another Win for Slights
And congratulations go to Kaaron Warren -again – for racking up yet another win for the astonishing Slights.
