Posted by: | Comments (0)

BookOfSecrets-front-crop-72dpiYes, less than 2 months after the launch of Angry Robot, and less than a month after the launch of Chris Roberson‘s excellent novel, Book of Secrets has become our first title to go to a second printing!

Quick – go and grab a copy of the first edition before they all disappear from the shelves…

Oh, if only Marco wasn’t on holiday – I’ll just have to crack open this bottle of champagne, myself…

That Remic chap – not content with writing some of the best SF around, and now moving onto some truly excellent epic fantasy with Kells’s Legend – Book One of the Clockwork Vampire Chronicles*, he’s also now a budding film director!

The following film was written, directed, and stars our dear Mr Remic, and gives a good taste of the flavour of Kell’s Legend, which is launched in the UK and Australia next week. Music by th3 m1ss1ng.

*Seriously – clockwork vampires! You have to be dead inside to think that’s not cool!

Angry Masquerade

Posted by: | Comments (0)

One of the things we did at WorldCon a couple of weeks ago was to sponsor a prize in the masquerade. It was a fun event, and we offered a prize for the best Angry Robot.

Look left – I’m sure you’ll agree this one looks particularly angry. Well, I wouldn’t want to cross him!

The winner was Devin Harrigan and his magnificent creation, “Atomic Robot and the Thing From Beyond WorldCon”.

Devin wins a copy of every one of our books in our first year of publishing, an Angry Robot trophy and our undying admiration!

More wise words on eBooks

Posted by: | Comments (0)

coolerebookWhile you’re sitting at home or work, waiting for the day we announce our books are available as eBooks (should be ultra soon, now – will update when we have further info), why not sit back and pop on over to the SFX website and read about eBook pricing – why some companies charge the prices they do, and what the costs of producing an eBook are compared to a paperback or hardback. Feel free to comment while you’re there, by the way…

I can’t see it, myself…

All those of us who keep lamenting the fact that we’re not yet living in the future we were promised (where are the jet packs, the food pills, the silver jumpsuits?) can start living in hope again.

A scientist at St Andrews’ University is attempting to develop a way of making invisibility a reality using “geometry, light and a wee bit of magic”.

Moxyland Short Story Competition

Posted by: | Comments (1)

robottype1There’s still plenty of time to enter the Moxyland short story competition. We’re running a competition to write a short story based in Lauren BeukesMoxyland world. The three winning entries will be published in Lauren’s next book, Zoo City (May 2010).

There have been a few entries already, but there’s always room for more!

Full details over at Authonomy – and if you haven’t yet read Moxyland, you can pick it up for just £4.99 from Play.com or read it for free online at Authonomy while the competition is live! We’re like the Ambassador handing out the Ferrero Roche!

Oh, and we’re basking in the love of Eoin Purcell at the moment, who writes:

I’d be hard pressed to find an issue with this project… It’s not just that Harper are embracing Fan Fiction and encouraging it even, but they have added real value to Authonomy by doing this. They have used clever cross platform tools to bring a really worthwhile competition to the Authonomy community and have, I think, created one of the most compelling and engaging promotions so far this year. All told, praise if deserved.

Awww, shucks!

Meanwhile, over at the Never Too Serious blog, the reviewer states that:

I LOVED ‘Moxyland’. It is original, fast-paced, and bloody good fun, filled with awesome characters that I really wanted to spend more time reading about, and is full of brilliantly-observed details of a society in the not-too-distant future that is both fantastically different, but worryingly familiar… I couldn’t recommend ‘Moxyland’ highly enough.

Head on over to read the full review.

Latest reviews round-up

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Oh, has this been a busy time for reviews of Angry Robot books? Why yes, it has – thank you so much for asking…

Let’s start off with some details on this month’s titles, Tim Waggoner’s Nekropolis and Chris Roberson’s Book of Secrets:

Over at Bibliophile Stalker, Charles Tan had this to say about Nekropolis:

enough action and mystery to keep readers mesmerized and on their toes.

while over at Barbara Martin’s blog:

Described in vivid detail, the different creatures such as the genetically enhanced shapeshifters and gangs of cyberpunk vampires, and the incidents within the story have a decided ick factor to them.

(“ick factor” is good, right?) and

I recommend this book for any crime, mystery, fantasy or horror reader who wants a taste of something a little bit different.

Meanwhile, over at SciFiChick.com, this is how the book is summarised:

The setting is a lot like Simon Green’s Nightside series with mystery, dark humor, and horror. Though I found myself enjoying this novel even more. The story is darker, a bit more complex, with likeable characters. It’s fresh and fun; and I didn’t want it to end. Fantasy and horror fans, don’t miss this fantastic release.

We agree.

Ok, how about some Book of Secrets lovin’?

Red Rook Reviews tell us that not only is Chris

a damn fine writer,

but that

It moves in two directions–a very readable first person narrative in the form of a crime novel that progresses to the conclusion of the mystery and a fantasy novel that moves in reverse to disclose the nature of the universe. The two stories collide at the portal and the protagonist [minor spoiler removed]

Meanwhile, over at Total SciFi, the Site Formerly Known as DreamWatch describes Chris’ book as

effective and engaging

and finally (for now), Falcata Times tells us that Book of Secrets is

incredibly well done and is a book that has to be applauded for its bravery in this new style of creation. Definitely a book that can spawn a series and one that I hope will continue to expand with each future release. Great stuff.

Incidentally, Falcata Times also has a great interview with Chris. Check it out.

Falcata Times: Writing is said to be something that people are afflicted with rather than gifted and that it’s something you have to do rather than want. What is your opinion of this statement and how true is it to you?

Chris Roberson: I’ve always said that anyone who can stop writing should—if you’re really a writer, you don’t have a choice in the matter. I’m certainly one of those who has written compulsively since childhood, and I couldn’t stop if I wanted to. Luckily, I love writing, so it’s not any kind of burden. But definitely, even if no one was paying me to write, I’d still be doing it.

Slights: the soundtrack

Posted by: | Comments (2)

This reposted from Kaaron Warren’s blog, cos we thought it was well worth repeating. Obviously we couldn’t do anything like offer a copy of KW’s next novel, Walking the Tree, to the first person to post a link to this as a mix-tape in our Comments…

When Hollywood calls, I already have the soundtrack to “Slights”, as devised by our High Commissioner to Fiji, Mr James Batley, who hosted the Fiji launch on Wednesday night. Here is his list. Wonderful stuff!

Picture 1Yes, we’re getting quite a few of these tasty reviews, because Slights is a genuinely wonderful book, and of course you should all buy it and read it as soon as you are able.

But this one is in Publisher’s Weekly. Yes, the Bible of the US publishing industry. Yes, read by every bookstore owner and stock buyer across North America.

So what do they say? Oh, how it’s great, fabulous, a wonderfully assured debut that doesn’t read like the work of a debut author. We sort of know that. But then they stuck on the star – that means so much more. A starred review is the best of its class, which is always tremendous, on the rare occasions it happens.

Aaaand then, well, they also chose it as Pick of the Week. Oh wow. That never happens. So sorry, Philip Roth and Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Penny Vicenzi and Anita Shreve, but you can eat our dust.

Look, thanks so very much PW. We know the book is bloody brilliant. But so very, very wonderful to hear it from your experts.
