Slights – the cover
Posted by: | CommentsWell, if you’ve got it, you should definitely flaunt it. Photo by the lovely Stefan Kopinski, design by Argh!, cute little girl-demon second right from the depths of some hell you really don’t want to end up.
Slights will be published in the UK on 1st July 09, with a US edition following in September.
That incredible quote, by the way, is right on the money. This is an extraordinary book.

Photographer: Fiona Royds. Creative Director: Georgia Gardner. Used by kind permission of Obrigado Magazine.
I’m currently on holiday in the wilds of Wales (have you seen the Torchwood episode “Countrycide”? I think they based it on the locals). It’s currently raining, and if the wind was any faster they’d be giving it a name.
So, I logged on and checked my email (I know, I know, I’m supposed to be relaxing, but I’m with a 1yr old and 5yr old – taking time out to check email is relaxing!).
The photograph you see to the left was waiting for me in my inbox. It’s part of a photoshoot by Obrigado Magazine, and our very own Lauren Beukes (pictured) was featured.
We’ve been considering asking Dan Abnett to do the same, but we’re not sure he’d suit the hat…
Many thanks to Georgia at Obrigado for allowing us to share. Click the photo to see the rest of the shoot.
Dan Abnett joins our robot horde

Today, we are delighted to announce we’ve signed noted SF & Fantasy author Dan Abnett for three original novels, for a substantial five-figure advance.
Dan made his name in the tie-in SF and Fantasy fiction field, selling more than 1.2 million copies in English language of his Warhammer 40,000 novels for Games Workshop’s Black Library imprint. They’ve also been translated into ten other languages. He’s also recently made the UK fiction charts with original Torchwood and Doctor Who novels. His comicbook scripts, for major publishers such as Marvel, DC Comics and the UK’s 2000 AD, have attracted critical plaudits and strong sales on both sides of the Atlantic.
The three novels for Angry Robot will allow Abnett to play to all his strengths as a writer. His penchant for wildly imaginative world-building and lovable characters comes to the fore in TRIUMFF: HER MAJESTY’S HERO, a ribald, swashbuckling alternate history set in a warped version of our present day … only with Elizabeth the XXX on the throne, ushering a new Elizabethan age of wonder and exploration. This will be published, in both the UK and US, in October 2009.
Next year will see two novels set in the same stunning future-war setting. EMBEDDED sends a journalist into the frontline of a distant planetary war… chipped inside the head of a combat veteran. When the soldier is killed, the journo must use all his resourcefulness to get safely home again, reporting on a live feed all the way. No one writes future war as well as Dan Abnett, and fans of tie-in series such as “Gaunt’s Ghosts” and his “Horus Heresy” novels will be blown away by this bold new move into original science fiction.

It almost goes without saying, but this is a great day.
Tim Waggoner on “The Making of Nekropolis”
Posted by: | Comments
That sinister purveyor of secrets crepuscular and cadaverous, Lord Waggoner has published a long but entertaining piece on his own website wherein he attempts to explain the tortuous origins of Nekropolis.
As he reveals, what a long, strange journey it’s been so far… But that is as naught compared to where it’s going…
Review copies have flown the nest
Posted by: | Comments
The first review copies of our 4 launch titles will be hitting the doormats of some of the nation’s reviewers today and tomorrow, with more to follow.
Electronic review copies will also be winging their way towards our Robot Army in the next day or two, as well, though some Robot Army recruits will also be given the opportunity to receive physical copies.
It’s all go here, you know…
Kaaron Warren – online convention appearance
Posted by: | Comments
As you may have picked up, we adore the writing of Kaaron Warren, to such an extent that we bought three novels from her without so much as a pause for breath. But Kaaron currently lives in Fiji, which is great for her but not so hot for meet’n'greet promotion.
However there’s now a way to find out a lot more about her, with a her upcoming appearance at Flycon 2009 – an online sf/fantasy convention and it’s taking place this weekend. Yowsah, cool idea – there’s even a dealer’s room.
The full programme of events has more details, but Kaaron tells us that she’s specifically contributing to a bunch of discussions, as follows:
SAT 14th MARCH, 2am GMT – Talking about Stephen King and horror
SAT 14th MARCH, 7pm GMT – Talking about books I read outside the genre.
SUN 15th MARCH, 1am GMT – Talking all about herself… which means lots of juicy discussion about the astonishing descent into one woman’s very public hell that is Slights.
Traditional “Waa-hooh! The first proofs have arrived” posting
Posted by: | Comments
Writes itself, really. Piece of cake, this blogging lark. I don’t why people make such a fuss about it.
What we can tell you that isn’t blindingly obvious? Yes, that’s a corporate proof design based on our logo and not the actual finished book covers. These are super-limited and you haven’t got a prayer of snagging one — unless you go join our Robot Army of bloggers and reviewers, and help spread the word of our charming and, dare I say, strangely alluring metal masters.
As to the very fine gentleman lurking at the back of our fragrant display, well, that’s Moxy. He stars in Moxyland. He’s even rarer than the proofs, though there are a few of him lurking around. But if you’re really, really lucky you might very well be able to get your hands on him too. How, you ask? See above, kid, see above.
Launch Titles Announced!

Not content with launching our new website today, we also have news of our first four books!
Angry Robot launches in the UK in July 2009, and in the US and the rest of the world from September. Ebook editions will be available worldwide from July. Our first titles are a mix of genres, from street smart neat-future thriller to ultradark horror to wild modern fantasy. Our authors, too, fulfil our mission: two men and two women, two new writers and two established, and from all corners of the globe – in this case the USA, Fiji and South Africa.
Check out the individual pages for more details of both books and authors.
July 2009
- Moxyland by Lauren Beukes (Science Fiction)
- Slights by Kaaron Warren (Horror)
August 2009
- Book of Secrets by Chris Roberson (Modern Fantasy)
- Nekropolis by Tim Waggoner (Urban Fantasy)
Welcome to our new home…
Posted by: | CommentsFor those of you who have been following us at our previous site, and to every new reader, welcome!
We’ve been beavering away behind the scenes for many months (well, I have for two, but Marco and Chris have a significant head start on me), and you can now read copious details of our first books and our authors.
Tomorrow we receive our first ARCs, and they’ll be sent out over the next week or so to UK-based reviewers – we launch in the UK in July (actually, our July books are out on June 25th) and in the US and the rest of the world in September. Ebooks of each title will debut worldwide alongside our British editions.
That’s not to say that overseas reviewers will be left in the lurch for the first few months – far from it! We’ll still be sending out electronic review copies, and news about forthcoming titles, and building our Robot Army – a taskforce of bloggers, genre site owners and others. There’s plenty still to do!
There will be plenty of things happening here at AngryRobotBooks.com, too, so remember to set your RSS feed, or join the Robot Army.
Thought you might like to see this…

Rather a smart little thing. We’ve had it for a little while, actually, but now’s a good time to show it off.
Also worth showing off: our new website will be up on Monday. It includes details of our first releases and how you can sign-up for our robot army. Busy people, us.
